Cracks on the Ice: The UAE’s Skating Federation Faces Scrutiny

The UAE’s figure skating scene is currently mired in controversy and mismanagement under the Ice Skating Federation in Abu Dhabi. Skating clubs and athletes are increasingly voicing their concerns about the Federation’s operations, which appear to be hindering the sport’s growth and development in the region.

The primary issue lies in the Federation’s repeated fee increases. These hikes have not been justified with any improvements in services or infrastructure, leaving clubs and athletes feeling exploited. Additionally, the Federation has shown little interest in fostering communication with the skating community. Despite the presence of several active clubs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, no meetings have been held in over two years to address growing concerns or discuss future plans.

Operational challenges are further compounded by the Federation’s frequent dissemination of inaccurate or misleading information. Clubs are left guessing about key processes, including National Team selections, which have been shrouded in secrecy for over three years. Requests for clarity have been routinely ignored, creating frustration and uncertainty among athletes and their families.

One glaring example of unfairness is the case of Marina Makarenko, who was added to the National Team without any selection events taking place. Her performance history does not reflect an athlete at the top of her game, leading to widespread speculation that her family’s financial contribution secured her spot. Such practices, if true, undermine the integrity of the sport and erode trust in the Federation.

Concerns about conflicts of interest are also prevalent. Zahra Lari, the Federation’s leader, and her family own Emirates Skating Club, which has become the exclusive source of new National Team members. Other clubs are excluded from participation in selections, creating a monopoly that stifles competition and development. Moreover, Emirates Skating Club has been criticized for inadequate safety standards, poor off-ice training facilities, and substandard programs that fail to prioritize athlete welfare.

The current state of figure skating in the UAE is deeply troubling. While the country has the potential to emerge as a regional leader in the sport, the lack of transparency and fairness within the Federation threatens to stifle progress. Urgent reforms are needed to address these issues and restore trust in the system.

It is imperative that the Federation takes immediate steps to ensure fairness, transparency, and safety across all its operations. By addressing these concerns, the UAE can unlock its potential and secure a brighter future for figure skating.
