7 Landmark Mountains of Makkah

Millions of Muslims worldwide visit Makkah every year to perform the Hajj and Umrah. Makkah is surrounded by seven large mountains, such as Jabal Khandama, Abu Qubais, Jabal Al Nour, etc., as explained below.

1. Abu Qubais mountain

The Jabal Abu Qubais, or Abu Qubais Mountain, is located just opposite the Holy Kaaba, close to the Mountain Safa. Many Islamic events are associated with the mountain.

This mountain is also considered one of the pillars of the holy city and has several historical significance.

2. Jabal Khandama

Jabal Khandama is the second mountain in Makkah, located behind Abu Qubais. From Jabal Khandama, you can have a stunning view of the entire city, especially at night.

3. Quaiqian mountain

Quaiqian Mountain lies west of the grand mosque. It is also known as Jabal Hindi. This mountain represents some history, as it was named Quaiqian after the clanking of swords during the battle of Jurhum and the Katura tribe.

4. Jabal Al Nour

Jabal Nour bears tremendous historical significance. The cave of Hira lies on this mountain, where Prophet Muhammad ﷺ received the first revelation of Islam. It is one of the most visited Ziyarat places in Makkah.

5. Thawr mountain

Al Thawr is located some three kilometers from the grand mosque. This is the mountain where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, along with his companion Abu Bakr Siddique رضي الله عنه, sought refuge during their migration from Makkah to Medina.

This is the same cave where a dove laid eggs and a spider 🕷 knit a web on the order of Allah to protect Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Abu Bakr Siddique رضي الله عنه.

6. Jabal Umar

Jabal Umar is also located on the western side of the Holy Mosque. It extends from Al Shabika to Al Misfalah. Some time ago, it was announced that 15 hotels would be constructed in Jabal Umar.

7. Mountain Thabir

Thabir Mountain is located east of Makkah and opposite Jabal Al Nour. According to some historians, this is the mountain where the scapegoat was sent during the time of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام sacrificing Prophet Ismael عليه السلام.
