Background
Bani Israel lived in Egypt for many hundred years where the best of the best magicians used to live. Although they left Egypt in 1276 BC during the time of Prophet Musa عليه السلام and moved to Palestine, they did not leave Magic.
In 970 BC when Allah made Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام the king of Jinns, humans, and animals, Bani Israel started claiming that he is a magician.
They were blaming the prophet of Allah for committing magic while they themselves were involved in it.
They ˹instead˺ followed the magic promoted by the devils during the reign of Solomon. Never did Solomon disbelieve, rather the devils disbelieved. – Al-Baqarah 2:102
A test from Allah
Upon this, Allah decided to test them by sending Harut and Marut, two of his angels in human form to Babylone as undercover agents.
When Harut and Marut started showing magical wonders to Bani Israel, they were so influenced by them that they wanted to learn them despite the fact that they knew that it is Kufr.
It is similar to what Allah did with the people of Lut when he sent his angels as beautiful boys to test them.
Harut and Marut teaching Magic
Before teaching Bani Israel the magic, Harut and Marut used to tell them the religious repercussions of the act. They used to tell them that it is not allowed by Allah and it would jeopardize their afterlife.
Harut and Marut never taught anyone without saying, “We are only a test for you, so do not abandon ˹your˺ faith.” – Al-Baqarah 2:102
However, they became so fond of their magical artifices that they continued to resort to talismans and sorcery.
Favorite Magic of Babylone
In the same Ayah of the Holy Quran, Allah tells us that the people of Babylone were most interested in learning the magic from Harut and Marut to cast drift between husband and wife.
Yet people learned ˹magic˺ that caused a rift ˹even˺ between husband and wife; although their magic could not harm anyone except by Allah’s Will. – Al-Baqarah 2:102
Conclusion
Who knows how many angels may be busy performing their duties in our midst even today!
Therefore, we should be careful while dealing with people as any of them could be Harut and Marut testing us on the orders of Allah.
