There are 33 women who have been referred to in the Holy Quran but there is only one woman mentioned by name i.e. Maryam عليه السلام. Here are the details of all of them;
Hawwa – wife of Prophet Adam
The first woman on Earth is Hawwa عليه السلام, the wife of Prophet Adam عليه السلام. Hawwa and Adam have the honor of being created directly by God. The name Hawwa refers to human equality.
O Adam! This is surely an enemy to you and to your wife. – Taha 20:117

Waghilah – the wife of Prophet Noah
The name of the wife of Prophet Noah عليه السلام was Waghilah who used to give away the identity of the new believers so the disbelievers could persecute them and she is mentioned in the Holy Quran.
Allah sets forth an example for the disbelievers: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. Each was married to one of Our righteous servants, yet betrayed them. So their husbands were of no benefit to them against Allah whatsoever. Both were told, “Enter the Fire, along with the others!” – At-Tahrim 66:10
Sara – wife of Prophet Ibrahim
Sara was the second wife of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام. She is mentioned in the Holy Quran when she was approached by the Angels to tell her the good news of a son Ishaq عليه السلام and a grandson Yaqub عليه السلام.
Upon this Sara عليه السلام laughed that how can I have a child in this old age, and my husband here is an old man? – Hud 11:72
Hajar – mother of Prophet Ismail
Hajar عليه السلام was the second wife of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام who gave birth to Prophet Ismail عليه السلام. Upon Allah’s orders, Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام left her in Makkah with the infant Ismail and left for Palestine.
Soon after Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام left, Hajar and Ismail food and water got finished. The baby started crying and Hajra became thirsty and had no milk in her breasts to feed the infant Ismail.
She started running between the Mountains Safa and Marwa in a desperate attempt to find food and water leaving her son Ismail near the Holy Kaaba. Allah liked it so much that he made it a fard act of Umrah.
Waliha – Wife of Prophet Lut
The name of the wife of Prophet Lut عليه السلام was Waliha who used to tell the men about her husband’s handsome male visitors so they could approach them.
Allah sets forth an example for the disbelievers: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. Each was married to one of Our righteous servants, yet betrayed them. So their husbands were of no benefit to them against Allah whatsoever. Both were told, “Enter the Fire, along with the others!” – At-Tahrim 66:10
Angels told Prophet Lut عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ that his wife will not be able to save herself as she is among those who will be cursed by Allah. – Al-Hijr 15:60
The wife of Prophet Loot عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ looked back and became a pillar of salt. It is said that this is the place where the wife of Prophet Loot عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ turned back and turned into a pillar of salt. If you go towards the Dead Sea from Aqaba, you will find this place on your way.
Reita & Zagharta – Daughters of Prophet Lut
Prophet Lut عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ had two daughters Reita and Zagharta. Many believe that when he offered his daughters to the people of Lut for marriage in exchange for not harming the angels of Allah.– Al-Hijr 15:71
However, the majority believes that he was referring to the single women of his community.
Zulaykha – Aziz’s wife
Aziz’s wife, Zulaykha has a mention in the Holy Quran. She was the one who tried to seduce Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ. In surah Yusuf, Allah unfolds the story.
Al-Aziz did not have any children so he asked his wife (Zulaikha) to take care of Yusuf as they might consider adopting him later. – Yusuf 12:21
Zulaikha tried to seduce him after locking all the doors. She advanced towards him but Allah showed a divine sign to Prophet Yusuf عليه السلام so that he can stay away from it. – Yusuf 12:24
Hazrat Yusuf عليه السلام replied: “Allah is my refuge! It is ˹not right to betray˺ my master, who has taken good care of me. – Yusuf 12:23
Prophet Yusuf عليه السلام raced to the door and she tore his shirt from the back while trying to grab him. They found her husband at the door.
She cried, “What is the penalty for someone who tried to violate your wife, except imprisonment or a painful punishment? – Yusuf 12:25
- Hazrat Yusuf عليه السلام replied: It was she who tried to seduce me.
A witness from her own family testified: “If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth and he is a liar.” As the shirt was torn from the back, Al-Aziz could figure out that Zulaikha is at fault.
Mother and sister of Prophet Musa
The mother and sister of Prophet Musa عليه السلام are also two women mentioned in the Holy Quran. The year Prophet Musa was born, the Pharoah was killing all the newborn boys of Bani Israel.
We inspired the mother of Moses: “Nurse him, but when you fear for him, put him then into the river, and do not fear or grieve.” – Al-Qasas 28:7
Prophet Musa عليه السلام reached the house of Pharoah but he refused to take milk from anyone. They brought to him the wet nurses but he did not accept to take milk from them. So they took him out to the marketplace. When his sister (Maryam) saw him, she directed them to her house.
Asiya – Wife of Pharoah
Asiya عليه السلام was the wife of Pharaoh but she was a believer and has been mentioned in the Holy Quran. She had the honor of raising Prophet Musa عليه السلام as she became her foster mother and stood by him during his mission. She was killed by her husband for standing in the path of Allah!
The wife of the pharaoh was tortured under the sun and when the pharaoh would finish the torture session, the angels would shade her with their wings. She was shown her house in Paradise. – At-Tahrim 66:11
Daughters of Prophet Harun
Hazrat Musa عليه السلام fled from Egypt and reached Madyan (currently situated in Saudi Arabia).
After reaching the city of Madyan, he went to a well (Moses Well) to drink water. He saw two girls waiting for their turn to fetch water for their herd, Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ helped them.
After returning to their father who was Prophet Shoaib عليه السلام, they talked about Hazrat Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and requested their father to reward him.
He saw that Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was courteous so he asked him to stay with them for 8 years which was later extended to 10 years. Moses was married to one of his daughters. The house of Prophet Shoaib is one of the places to visit in Tabuk.
Bilkis – the queen of Sheba
Blkis, the queen of Sheba is another woman mentioned in the Holy Quran. The name of the Queen of Sheba was Bilkis who read the letter sent by Prophet Solomon عليه السلام inviting them to the path of Allah.
In response, she sent him a gift to see if he was only a king (so he would be satisfied with a tribute) or a prophet (who would only settle with submission to the True God).
Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام refused to accept the royal gift sent by Bilkis and threatened that we will certainly mobilize against them forces which they can never resist, and we will drive them out from there in disgrace if they refuse to submit.
Hazrat Solomon عليه السلام asked who can bring him the throne of the queen of Sheba. One of his believing advisors Asif bin Barkhiya said that I can bring it to you in the blink of an eye. Soon the throne was in front of Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام who asked his people to disguise it.
When the queen of Sheba arrived and saw her mighty throne which was brought all the way from Yemen to Palestine, she submitted to Allah and embraced Islam. – An-Naml 27:21-42
Wife of Imran
The wife of Imran, who is the mother of Maryam عليه السلام and the grandmother of Prophet Isa عليه السلام has been mentioned in Holy Quran.
The wife of Imran (Hannah) prayed to Allah to bless her with a child that she would dedicate to the temple. – Al-Imran 3:35
When she gave birth to a girl, she named her Maryam and dedicated her to the service of Bait-al-Maqdas under the guardianship of Prophet Zakariya عليه السلام.
Maryam – mother of Prophet Isa
Maryam عليه السلام who is the mother of Prophet Isa عليه السلام is the only woman in the world mentioned by her name in the Holy Quran. Chapter 19 of the Holy Quran is named Maryam after her name.
She, at a tender age, was devoted to the services of Allah and is mentioned in the Holy Quran for her character, virtue, and purity.
Quran refers to her as “above the women of all the worlds.” – An-Nisa 3:42
Wives of Prophet Muhammad
The wives of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ are mentioned in the Holy Quran as Mothers of the believers.
The Prophet is closer to the Believers than their selves, and his wives are their mothers. – Al-Ahzab 33:6
The wives of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ were not allowed to marry anyone else after the death of the Prophet.
O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women: if you are mindful ˹of Allah˺, then do not be overly effeminate in speech ˹with men˺ or those with sickness in their hearts may be tempted, but speak in a moderate tone. – Al-Ahzab 33:32
Daughters of Prophet Muhammad
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was blessed with four daughters from Khadija رضي الله عنها who have been mentioned in the Holy Quran.
O Prophet! Ask your wives, daughters, and believing women to draw their cloaks over their bodies. – Al-Ahzab 33:59
Khawlah – The woman who complained
There is a mention of a woman Khawlah bint Tha’labah in the Holy Quran who complained to Allah Almighty about her husband. As a result of her appeal, Allah changed the rule of Sharia.
Indeed, Allah has heard the argument of the woman who pleaded with you ˹O Prophet˺ concerning her husband and appealed to Allah. – Al-Mujadila 58:1
Wife of Abu Lahab
The wife of Abu Lahab, Umm Jamil bint Harb has also been mentioned in the Holy Quran. She was a non-believer.
“Abu Lahab’s wife shall carry The (crackling) wood as fuel. A twisted rope of palm-leaf fibre Round her (own) neck” – Al-Masad 111:4
