Hannah bint Faqudh and the wife of Prophet Zakariya عليه السلام were sisters, but both of them had no children.
Hannah bint Faqudh prayed to Allah to bless her with a child that she would dedicate to the temple. – Al-Imran 3:35
When she gave birth to a girl, she named her Maryam. Imran ibn Mathan died before the birth of Hazrat Maryam عليه السلام, and Hannah bint Faqudh raised her with great devotion and care.
Later she dedicated Maryam to the service of Bait-al-Maqdas under the guardianship of Prophet Zakariya عليه السلام.
Whenever Hazrat Zakariya عليه السلام visited her in the sanctuary, he found her supplied with provisions.
- He exclaimed: “O Maryam! Where did this come from?”
- She replied: “It is from Allah. Surely Allah provides for whoever He wills without limit.” – Al-Imran 3:37
Maryam Pregnancy
When Maryam عليه السلام was 10 to 15 years old, an angel came to her to give her the good news that she will give birth to a prophet of Allah whose name will be Isa. – Aal-Imran 3:45
Maryam عليه السلام said: How can I have a child when no man has ever touched me?
Angel said: So will it be. Allah creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He simply says “كُن” and it happens. Allah will teach him writing and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel, and make him a Rasool of Bani Israel. – Aal-Imran 3:48
Then the angel blew and Maryam عليه السلام got pregnant. Many scholars have an opinion that she remained pregnant for 9 months but according to Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه, she got pregnant and then immediately gave birth to Hazrat Isa عليه السلام.
Prophet Isa Birth
Prophet Isa عليه السلام was born in 4 BC in present-day Palestine and was taken to the heavens in 26 AD at the age of 30 years. Quran explains his birth in detail as we have explained below. The labor pains drove Maryam عليه السلام to the trunk of a palm tree.
- She cried: “Alas! I wish I had died before this and was a thing long forgotten!” – Maryam 19:23
- Jibril said: Do not grieve! Your Lord has provided a stream at your feet. – Maryam 19:24
- Jibril said: Shake the trunk of this palm tree towards you, it will drop fresh, ripe dates upon you. So eat and drink, and put your heart at ease.
It is believed that Prophet Isa عليه السلام was born at the place where we have the Church of Nativity today in Bethlehem. The distance between the chamber of Hazrat Maryam عليه السلام and the birthplace of Prophet Jesus is around 10 km.
After childbirth, when Maryam عليه السلام carried Prophet Isa عليه السلام to the city, people started blaming her for committing adultery.
Prophet Isa spoke in the cradle
In the meantime, Prophet Isa عليه السلام a few hours old baby started talking;
- I am truly a servant of Allah. He has destined me to be given the Scripture and to be a prophet. – Maryam 19:30
Even after watching a baby speaking from the cradle, the majority of Jews determined that he was a child of fornication and that his speaking in his cradle was merely sorcery.
Is Jesus the son of God?
Due to the birth of Prophet Isa عليه السلام without a father, different groups of people had differing opinions about him.
- Jews determined that he was a child of fornication – أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰهَ.
- Christians believe that Jesus is the son of God.
- Muslims believe that he was born to Maryam عليه السلام but without a father.
- Allah said: It is not for Allah to take a son! – Maryam 19:35
- Allah has never had offspring, nor was He born. – Al-Ikhlas 112:3
Therefore, as per Muslims’ belief, Hazrat Isa عليه السلام is not the son of God.
The appearance of Prophet Isa
When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ went for Meraj, he met Prophet Isa عليه السلام in the second heaven.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, ” Jesus was of red complexion, curly hair, and a broad chest.” – Sahih al-Bukhari 3438

They said: Would your Allah be willing to send down to us a table spread with food from heaven? We wish to eat from it to reassure our hearts, to verify you are indeed truthful to us. – Al-Ma’idah 5:112
When Prophet Isa عليه السلام prayed for it, Allah answered: “I am sending it down to you. But whoever among you denies afterward will be subjected to a torment I have never inflicted on anyone of My creation.- Al-Ma’idah 5:115
The rule of Saturday
There is a gap of around 1232 years before the birth of Prophet Isa عليه السلام and the death of Prophet Musa عليه السلام upon whom the Torah was revealed.
Allah had abstained from Bani Israel to work on Saturday for their livelihood i.e the rule of Saturday. However, in all these years Jews scholars had prohibited many other activities on Saturday such as treating patients, lighting fires for food, and many other acts.
Prophet Isa عليه السلام kept on telling them that this kind of act are not as per the 10 commandments of the Torah which made him their biggest enemy.
Hazrat Isa عليه السلام preached the real concepts of the Torah as Allah had guided addressing all the new modifications the Jews priests had done which annoyed them.
The case of an adulteress woman
The priests wanted to embarrass him and prove that he had come to destroy the Mosaic Law/Sharia.
Once they brought an adulteress woman and asked him for her punishment as per Mosaic Law/Sharia i.e. stoning to death.
Prophet Isa عليه السلام knew that it was their game so he said that he would be stoned to death by someone who is not sinful. None of them came forward and the woman was released.
He let the priests understand that those who call people to Almighty Allah are not executioners.
A plot to kills Prohet Isa
In 26 AD, Bani Israel complained to Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect (governor) of Judaea that Prophet Isa عليه السلام discourages them from following the Roman Empire as they were disbelievers.
The governor became furious and sent his men to capture Prophet Jesus عليه السلام to torture and crucify him. When they surrounded `Isa’s home, Allah saved him from them, raising him up from the house to heaven.
Allah put the image of Prophet Isa عليه السلام on a man who was in the house. They captured that man, humiliated and crucified him.
Is Jesus Dead or Alive?
Christians believe that Jesus was crucified by the Roman governor Pontius Pilate in 26 AD when he was 30 years old while Muslims believe that he was taken to the heavens and is still alive.
- They say that they killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of Allah. But they neither killed nor crucified him—it was only made to appear so. – An-Nisa 4:157
- “O Jesus! I will take you and raise you up to Myself. – Aal Imran 3:55
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is the place from where Prophet Isa عليه السلام was taken to the heavens.

Hazrat Isa عليه السلام would be carried on the shoulders of two angels dressed in yellow clothes. This minaret which has been referred to in the Hadith is located on the left of the Ummayad mosque. It is known as the Jesus Minaret. – Sunan Ibn Majah 4075
