He was sent to Madyan

The people of Madyan and dwellers of the wood used to commit sins and did not repent of them. They got involved in unethical activities like robbery, improper measurement while selling goods, and causing trouble to others.

Prophet Shoaib عليه السلام was sent by Allah to the people of Madyan which is located in the present-day Tabuk area to guide them to the right path. – Al-A’raf 7:85

Hazrat Shoaib عليه السلام said: O  my people! Give full measure and weigh with justice. Do not defraud people of their property, nor go about spreading corruption in the land. – Hud 11:85

Tabuk Ottomans Castle

It is believed that Tabuk Ottoman Castle was built about 3500 BC and mentioned in the Quran as أَصْـحَـاب الْأَيْـكَـة‎‎ “Companions of the Wood” this is the last rebuild by the Ottomans. – Ash-Shu’ara 26:176

Many scholars believe that أَصْـحَـاب الْأَيْـكَـة‎‎ were actually from the people of Madyan for whom Allah sent Prophet Shoaib عليه السلام.

Prophet Shoaib warned them

Prophet Shoaib عليه السلام spent several years trying to preach and persuade them that they are following the wrong way but when they did not listen to him, he warned them that Allah will destroy them if they do not come to the right path.

Hazrat Shoaib عليه السلام said: Do not let your opposition to me lead you to a fate similar to that of the people of Noah, or Hûd, or Ṣâliḥ. And the people of Lut are not far from you. – Hud 11:89

A threat to Expel

The arrogant chiefs of his people threatened, “O Shu’aib! We will certainly expel you and your fellow believers from our land unless you return to our faith.” Al-A’raf 7:88

According to some traditions, the people of Madyan even threatened Prophet Shoaib عليه السلام that if he were not from a powerful clan, they would have stoned him to death.

When they did not listen to him, Allah asked Hazrat Shoaib عليه السلام to leave the Madyan area along with his believing followers.

Prophet Shoaib عليه السلام turned away from them, saying, “O my people! Indeed, I have delivered to you the messages of my Lord and given you ˹sincere˺ advice. How can I then grieve for those who chose to disbelieve?” – Al-A’raf 7:93

After Prophet Shoaib عليه السلام and his followers left the city of Madyan, Allah crushed them with a blast and an earthquake.

It is said that Allah stopped the wind in that area for 7 days and out of extremely hot temperatures, they went to a nearby Jungle. Allah sent a cloud and they felt relaxed under its shadow. After that, there was a big blast followed by an earthquake and a rain of fire from the sky.

Blast: The mighty blast overtook the wrongdoers, so they fell lifeless in their homes as if they had never lived there. – Hud 11:94

Earthquake: Then an overwhelming earthquake struck them and they fell lifeless in their homes. – Al-A’raf 7:91

Musa – the son-in-law

After reaching the city of Madyan, he went to a well to drink water. He saw two girls waiting for their turn to fetch water for their herd, Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ helped them.

After returning to their father Prophet Shoaib عليه السلام, they talked about Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and requested their father to reward him.

He saw that Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was courteous so he asked him to stay with them for 8 years which was later extended to 10 years. Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was married to one of his daughters.
