The Saudi government has announced that if someone is found growing invasive plants at their home, farm, or any other place, he will be fined SR 10,000/plant.
Why are they banned?
These invasive species are known for their rapid growth and abundant seed production, which allows them to spread through the assistance of birds, animals, and wind. They pose a significant threat to the native vegetation.
Many people do not know that even an aloe vera plant is an invasive plant.
Famous Invasive Plants
Fifty-two exotic species have been documented in Saudi Arabia, with some having entered and become naturalized in the Kingdom several decades ago. Among these, 44 are from the American continents, four are from tropical countries, two are from Australia, and one is from East Asia, South Asia, and Iran.
All major invasive species in Saudi Arabia are native to the American continent. The following species potentially damage biodiversity or alter ecosystems in general.
