Khullaif is an Arabic word from “Takhallaf,” which means someone who missed out or failed to do something.
What is the Day of Khullaif?
When the men of Makkah are performing Hajj and go out with the pilgrims to Arafat to help, the women of Makkah, the boys, and the elderly go out to Masjid Al Haram to perform Tawaf around the Kaaba so that the Haram does not remain deserted.
The visitors on the day of Hajj at the Grand mosque are those who do not perform Hajj and thus are usually women, kids, and the elderly. These visitors thus stay in the mosque from Fajr to Isha prayers.
The day of Khulliaf marks availing of the opportunity by the women of Makkah to perform Umrah and take care of Masjid al-Haram.
Cleaning Masjid al-Haram
On the day of Khullaif, women even clean the Grand Mosque, as they know that the Hajj pilgrims will return for Tawaf on the third day.
Providing Food
Moreover, the people who do not perform Hajj follow the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ of keeping fast on the day of Arafah. Thus, these women bring food for those who observe the fast to accompany them when they break their fast.
Guarding the Houses
In the past, on the day of Khullaif, women would help the elderly. They would provide them with food, water, and assistance. They would also guard the houses of those who have left for Hajj.
