What is written on the door of the Kaaba?

If you look at the door of the Holy Kaaba, many verses of the Holy Quran are written there. What exactly is written there? We have explained below.

Surah Al-Fath

Once, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had a dream that he was performing Umrah in Masjid al-Haram, Makkah, while he was living in Madina. Upon this, Allah revealed this verse in the Holy Quran, written in the middle of the door of the Holy Kaaba.

  • لَّقَدْ صَدَقَ ٱللَّهُ رَسُولَهُ ٱلرُّءْيَا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ لَتَدْخُلُنَّ ٱلْمَسْجِدَ ٱلْحَرَامَ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ءَامِنِينَ

Indeed, Allah will fulfill His Messenger’s dream in all truth: Insha Allah, you will surely enter Masjid al-Haram, in peace. – Al-Fath 48:27

In the upper left corner, near the opening of the door of the Holy Kaaba, another verse of Surah Al-Fath is written.

  • مُّحَمَّدٌۭ رَّسُولُ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَٱلَّذِينَ مَعَهُۥٓ أَشِدَّآءُ عَلَى ٱلْكُفَّارِ رُحَمَآءُ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ تَرَىٰهُمْ رُكَّعًۭا سُجَّدًۭا
  • Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah. And those with him are firm with the disbelievers and compassionate with one another. You see them in Ruku and Sujood. – Al-Fath 48:29

Surah Al-Ikhlas

In the upper right corner, near the opening of the door of the Holy Kaaba, Surah Ikhlas is written. 

 قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “He is Allah—One ˹and Indivisible˺;
 ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ Allah—the Sustainer ˹needed by all˺.
لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ He has never had offspring, nor was He born.
وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ  And there is none comparable to Him.

 

Surah An-Nur

A little above the middle of the door, a verse of Surah An-Nur is written on the door of the Holy Kaaba.

  • ٱللَّهُ نُورُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ
  • Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. – An-Nur 24:35

Surah Al-Baqarah

Almost on the top of the door of the Holy Kaaba, a verse of Surah Al-Baarah is written. This verse was revealed when Allah changed the Qiblah for Muslims from Masjid al-Aqsa to Masjid al-Haram.

  • قَدْ نَرَىٰ تَقَلُّبَ وَجْهِكَ فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ ۖ فَلَنُوَلِّيَنَّكَ قِبْلَةًۭ تَرْضَىٰهَا ۚ
  • Indeed, We see you ˹O, Prophet˺ turning your face towards heaven. Now, We will make you turn towards a direction of prayer˺ that will please you. – Al-Baqarah 2:144

Ayat ul Kursi

Almost in the middle of the door of the Holy Kaaba, the entire Ayat-ul-Kursi, the longest verse of the Holy Quran, is written. In fact, we should recite it daily as there are many benefits of reciting Ayat-ul-Kursi.

اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ ۚ لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ ۚ لَّهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ ۗ مَن ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ ۚ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ ۖ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَيْءٍ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِ إِلَّا بِمَا شَاءَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ ۖ وَلَا يَئُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا ۚ وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ

Allah – there is no God except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?

He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Highest, the Greatest.

Surah Ali’ Imran

A verse of Surah Ali’ Imran is written just below the top of the door of the Holy Kaaba.

  • وَسَارِعُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ مَغْفِرَةٍۢ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَجَنَّةٍ عَرْضُهَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ أُعِدَّتْ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
  • And hasten towards forgiveness from your Lord and to that Jannah which has the vastness of the heavens and the earth. It has been prepared for those with Taqwa. – Ali ‘Imran 3:133

 

Surah Al-Fatiha

On the borders of the door of the Holy Kaaba, the entire Surah Fatiha is written. Surah Fatiha is the most powerful and the most recited Surah of the Holy Quran.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: Whoever does not recite Al-Fatiha in his prayer, his prayer is invalid. – Sahih al-Bukhari 756

Surah Quraish

Just a little down from the middle of the door of the Holy Kaaba, the entire Surah Quraish is written. – Quraish 106

لِإِيلَـٰفِ قُرَيْشٍ Because of the security enjoyed by the Quraish.
إِۦلَـٰفِهِمْ رِحْلَةَ ٱلشِّتَآءِ وَٱلصَّيْفِ Their ease of traveling in winter and summer.
فَلْيَعْبُدُوا۟ رَبَّ هَـٰذَا ٱلْبَيْتِ They ought to express gratitude to Allah and worship the lord of this House.
ٱلَّذِىٓ أَطْعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٍۢ وَءَامَنَهُم مِّنْ خَوْفٍۭ  Who fed them in their hunger and gave them safety from fear.

Made in Makkah

At the bottom of the door of the Holy Kaaba, one narration is written on each side.

  • This cloth is made in Makkah and gifted to the Holy Kaaba.
  • Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz. May Allah accept it from him.
