Does masturbation break the fast?

According to Islam, masturbation while fasting breaks the fast if sperms are ejaculated (or sexual vaginal secretions in the case of women).

However, hand practice does not break a fast if it does not result in the ejaculation of sperm. Still, it is a prohibited act while fasting, and one should stay away from it.

Allah ﷻ said: The Fast is for Me, and I will reward it, as the one who observes the fast leaves his sexual desire, food, and drinks for My Sake. – Sahih al-Bukhari 7492

What if I masturbate while fasting?

If you are someone who has masturbated while fasting in the holy month of Ramadan, you will have to offer a Qada, not Kaffara.

• Qaza for fasting: One day of fasting after Ramadan.
• Kaffara for fasting: free a slave or fast for 60 consecutive days or feed 60 poor people.

In other words, if you have broken your fast with masturbation, you will have to make up with one day of fasting after Ramadan.

Do wet dreams break the fast?

It is important to note that ejaculation resulting from wet dreams does not break the fast. The human being does not have any control over dreams, and therefore, Allah ﷻ does not punish us for that.
