Prophet Talut Birth
Prophet Talut عليه السلام was born in 1100 BC in present-day Palestine and died in 1010 BC at the age of 90 years. All the scholars have consensus on the fact that he was born into a humble family.
The name of King Talut has been mentioned two times in the Holy Quran.
Appointment of Talut as King
The people of Bani Israel wanted a king to be their new leader. It is mentioned in the Holy Quran.
Bani Israel said to one of their prophets: “Appoint for us a king, ˹and˺ we will fight in the cause of Allah.” – Al-Baqarah 2:246
In 1037 BC, Hazrat Shumail عليه السلام told them, “Allah has appointed Talut (Saul) to be your king.
Bani Israel said: How can he be our king when some of us are more deserving of kingship than he, and he has not been blessed with vast riches?”
Prophet Shumail عليه السلام replied: Allah has chosen him over you and blessed him with knowledge and stature. Allah grants kingship to whoever He wills. – Al-Baqarah 2:247
Hazrat Shumail عليه السلام further told Bani Israel: The sign of Talut’s kingship is that the Ark will come to you. – Al-Baqarah 2:248
Army against Jalut
Jalut was a giant ruler of Palestine who used to reside in the areas around the settlements of Israel. There had been many fights and battles between Israelis and the Philistines.
In the Battle of Aphek, the Israelis lost 34,000 men, as well as the Ark of the Covenant, and it went into the custody of the Philistines.
Prophet Talut عليه السلام gathered an army of 76,000 men against Jalut to recover the Ark of the Covenant.
The test of a river
When Prophet Talut عليه السلام marched forth with his army, he cautioned: “Allah will test you with a river. So whoever drinks his fill from it is not with me, and whoever does not taste it—except a sip from the hollow of his hands—is definitely with me.” – Al-Baqarah 2:249
It is said that around 72,000 men drank water at the Jordan River, and the remaining 4,000 passed the test and accompanied Prophet Talut عليه السلام.
After crossing the river, they said: We have no power this day against Jalut.
However, their knowledgeable scholars said that triumph comes from Allah Alone, not from the large numbers or the adequacy of the supplies.
Talut v/s Jalut War.
Prophet Talut عليه السلام promised that whoever killed Jalut would marry his daughter and would share his kingship and authority.
Dawud was a young boy who had developed extraordinary skills in slingshots. He had heard that Prophet Talut عليه السلام had agreed to marry his daughter to the one who killed Jalut.
Jalut, before the start of the war, provoked a one-on-one fight between him and anyone from Talut’s army. Dawud accepted the challenge and easily defeated Jalut with a single shot from a sling.
So they defeated them by Allah’s Will, and Prophet Dawud عليه السلام killed Jalut. – Al-Baqarah 2:251
With this, the army of Jalut retreated, and Prophet Talut عليه السلام won the battle and recovered the Ark of the Covenant.
Talut got Jealous of Dawud
Prophet Dawud عليه السلام became famous all around the Bani Israel, and women started singing songs for him.
Prophet Talut عليه السلام offered his youngest daughter Michal bint Talut as a wife to Prophet Dawud عليه السلام, which he accepted.
