Can I wear Ihram from Jeddah in a stopover?

Many pilgrims want to know if Islam allows them to wear Ihram for Hajj/Umrah from Jeddah if they have a stopover in the city.

Why wear Ihram in Jeddah?

Generally, you must wear Ihram to perform Umrah before crossing the Miqat.

However, some people come to stay with their relatives in Jeddah or attend a business meeting, and therefore, they do not want to wear Ihram from their home country while coming to Saudi Arabia.

They want to stay with their relatives for a few days, attend an office, and then go to Makkah to perform Umrah.

Who can wear Ihram in Jeddah?

The area within the boundaries of Miqat is called Al-Hill, which includes Jeddah, Khulais, al-Janun, and Taneem.

Pilgrims residing (Muqeem) in Al-Hill, including Jeddah, are allowed to wear Ihram at their homes or before entering Haram’s boundaries.

Who is Muqeem in Jeddah?

We have established that only Muqeem (residents) of Jeddah can wear Ihram from within the city. When does a person become Muqeem or a city resident as per Islam?

Allowed: Someone coming to Jeddah with the intention to stay in the city for 15 days without leaving the city would be considered a Muqeem of Jeddah from the very first day, and therefore, he will not be praying for Qasr prayer. He can wear Ihram to perform Umrah from Jeddah, even on the first day.

Not Allowed: Someone staying for 3,4 days in Jeddah at some relative place or attending a business meeting cannot wear an Ihram from within the city. He must go to either Juhfa Miqat or Qarn Al Manazil to wear Ihram.

Not Allowed: Similarly, if someone is coming to stay in Jeddah for more than 15 days but going to other cities within this time, he is not a Muqeem of Jeddah. To be considered a Muqeem, you must intend to stay in Jeddah for at least 15 days without leaving the city. Therefore, he must also go to either Juhfa Miqat or Qarn Al Manazil to wear Ihram.
