The literal meaning of Meezab-e-Rahmat is the “Water outlet of mercy”. Some people call it the gutter of the Holy Kaaba🕋 which I believe is not an appropriate name to be associated with the sacred building.

The sharp nails on the edges of Meezab are designed so that pigeons and other birds don’t sit there. If they sit here, their poop would contaminate the Hijr Ismail/Hateem which is part of the Holy Kaaba🕋 itself.

The length of the water outlet of mercy is 253 cm and the width is 26 cm. The portion which is inside the wall of the Kaaba roof is 58 centimeters. It is fixed at a height of around 50 feet above the ground.

History of Meezab-e-Rehmat

In 605 A.D, when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was 35 years old, a disastrous flood harmed the Holy Kaaba 🕋, which was already weakened previously by a huge fire, and was at risk of destruction.

Feeling the need to protect the house of worship, the Quraish chose to modify the structure and rebuilt the Kaaba, this was the first time the roof of the Kaaba and Meezab Rehmat was constructed.

  • In 605 A.D. first construction.
  • In 1554, Salman Qanuni covered the spout with a silver mask.
  • In 1573, his son Salem Sani built a gold-plated Meezab.
  • In 1594, Waleed Bin Abdul Malik rebuilt the meezab from pure gold.
  • In 1856, Sultan Abdul Majeed Khan remodeled the Meezab.
  • In 1996, the Meezab Rehmat was designed to be in its current state.
