Why did Prophet Muhammad marry 11 times?

While Muslims are allowed to keep 4 wives at a time, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ married 11 times. Have you ever wondered why it is so? I believe 9 out of his 11 marriages were performed for the following reasons;

  • Marriage to the widows of his companions to help their lives
  • Marriage between families to create strong family bonds e.g. marriage with the daughter of Abu Bakr رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ and Omer bin Khattab رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ.
  • Spreading the message of Islam by unifying different clans through the act of marriage
  • To increase the credibility and the number of sources to convey his private life.
