- Khadija bint Khuwaylid رضي الله عنها.

Khadija bint Khuwaylid رضي الله عنها married Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when she was 40 and he was 25. She was the first person to embrace Islam. Together they had six children.

Sawda bint Zam’an
Sawda bint Zam’an رضي الله عنها was the 2nd wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ whom he married after the death of Khadija رضي الله عنها. Immediately after the marriage, Sawda رضي الله عنها took care of the 4 daughters of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Aisha Bint Abu Bakr
Aisha Bint Abu Bakr رضي الله عنها was the 3rd and the youngest wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. She was the daughter of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنها, the first caliph of Islam.
It is said that Aisha رضي الله عنها married Prophet Muhammad ﷺ at the age of 7 but stayed at her parents’ place until she reached puberty. Aisha رضي الله عنها was the only virgin wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. She has narrated more than 2,200 hadiths.

Hafsa bint Umar رضي الله عنها was the 4th wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. She was the daughter of Umer bin Khattab رضي الله عنها, the second caliph of Islam. She has narrated around 60 hadith from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Zainab bint Khuzayma رضي الله عنها was the 5th wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ whom he married after one month of the 4th marriage. Due to her generosity, she was called the mother of beggars even at a time when she was not a Muslim.

Hind bint Abi Ummaya
Hind bint Abi Ummaya (Umm Salama) was the 6th and the eldest wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. She was among the very first people who converted to Islam. She was known in society for her intelligence, political savvy, and fighting activity.

Zainab bint Jahsh رضي الله عنها was a first cousin and the 7th wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. She was the ex-wife of Zayd ibn Harithah رضي الله عنها, the adopted son of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
At that time, people of Arab used to take adopted sons as their real sons with the right to inheritance. To break the taboo, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was instructed to marry Zaynab رضي الله عنها. – Al-Ahzab 33:37

Juwarriya bint Al-Harith رضي الله عنها was the 8th wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. When Muslims defeated Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, they captured the daughter of the chief Juwarriya bint Al-Harith.
She was brought up in the lap of luxury and had all the refinements and graces of a princess with exceptional intelligence and beauty.

Ramla bint Abu Sufyan
Ramla bint Abu Sufyan رضي الله عنها (Umm Habiba) was the 9th wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Umm Habiba رضي الله عنها embraced Islam in the beginning, although her father Abu Sufyan رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ was the most potent opponent of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

- Age of Ramla رضي الله عنها on marriage: 34 years.
- Ramla رضي الله عنها died at the age of 70.

Safiyya bint Huyeiy Ibn Akhtab
After the battle of Khyber, Muslims defeated several Jewish tribes. Among them was Banu Nadir. Safiyya رضي الله عنها was the daughter of the chief of the Banu Nadir tribe.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ got married her to strengthen Muslim influence over the Jewish tribe. Safiyya bint Huyeiy Ibn Akhtab رضي الله عنها was the 10th wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

- Age of Safiyya رضي الله عنها on marriage: 19 years.
- Safiyya رضي الله عنها died at the age of 60.

Maymoona bint Al-Harith
As a part of the signing of the treaty of Hudaibiyah, when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when to Makkah to perform Umrah, Maymoona bint Al-Harith رضي الله عنها proposed him, which he accepted. She became the 11th and the last wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
She was initially named Barra, but Prophet Muhammad ﷺ named her Maymoona, which meant “The Blessed one.” She was the last of the wives of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to die in 61 Hijri.

Maria Qibtiyya
Maria Qibtiyya رضي الله عنها was an Egyptian Coptic Christian concubine who had been sent as a gift from the Muqawqis. Ibrahim ibn Muhammad, a son of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, was born in Maria Qibtiya.
However, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had not married her, so she is not among the mother of believers.
Why did Prophet Muhammad marry 11 times?
While Muslims are allowed to keep 4 wives at a time, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ married 11 times. Have you ever wondered why it is so? I believe 9 out of his 11 marriages were performed for the following reasons;
- Marriage to the widows of his companions to help their lives
- Marriage between families to create strong family bonds e.g. marriage with the daughter of Abu Bakr رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ and Omer bin Khattab رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ.
- Spreading the message of Islam by unifying different clans through the act of marriage
- To increase the credibility and the number of sources to convey his private life.
